Name: KG3

For the 2006 aim high competition we build a very unique robot. KG-3 or Kate Gleason 3 is built to score inboth the 3 point and 1 point goals. It went on to be a very successful robot winning us 5th place, a place in the Finger Lakes Regional Quarter Finals, and the General Motors Industrial Design Award. In Boston KG-3 made it to the semi finals.

Strength

KG-3 was built with a very sturdy frame, but to protect the frame during the competition was a number of bumpers that surround the front, left, and right of the robot. To protect the roller in the back is a steel guard which can withstand a competition and a half of other robots slamming into the back of ours at full speed. The cannon is built with a t-slotted 8020 aluminum frame on top of that is the robot's primary electrical system which is also protected by a 1/8 inch thick sheet of Plexiglas.

Shooting Mechanism

The part that defines KG-3 is it's unique firing mechanism. Before the robot can actually fire like any firing arm it needs to load up on ammunition which is where the dangerous poof balls come in. On the back of the robot is a roller the roller can grab poof balls. After the poof balls are brought into the robot a conveyer will move the balls up to the launcher. The launcher consists of two wheels when its powered on the wheels will spin and launch the poof balls fast, accurate, and consistent. The Diagram below illustrates it.

Drive Train

Kate Gleason 3 includes kit bot transmission which is something that comes in very useful when the robot needs to climb the very steep ramp at the end of a match. There is also a total of 6 different wheels the advantage of having 6 wheels is if one tire blows 5 other wheels will be able to keep Kate Gleason 3 moving.

Autonomous Modes

Originally Kate Gleason 3 had a number of different autnomous mode functions such as auto-aiming, and closed loop steering. But after a while we found it easier for this type of competition to design our robot as a very defensive one which can basically ram into the robot that is aiming at the goal in order to prevent our opponents from scoring.
